Pragmatics is the study of how context contributes to meaning in language. It looks at how language is used in social interactions and the relationship between speaker and listener. Pragmatics is related to semantics and syntax, and involves understanding the intended meaning of a speaker. It emerged as its own field in the 1950s with the work of J.L. Austin and Paul Grice.
