A data breach is a security violation in which sensitive data is accessed, stolen or used by an unauthorized individual. It can range from malicious attacks to careless disposal of data storage media. Data breaches can be costly to organizations and involve financial information, personal health information, and other sensitive data. Many jurisdictions have passed laws requiring companies to inform customers if they have been subject to a data breach.
