Submarine links

Submarine communications cable

Submarine communications cables are underwater cables that connect land-based stations to transmit telecommunication signals across oceans and seas. These cables were first used in the 1850s for telegraphy traffic and have since evolved to carry telephone, data, and internet traffic using optical fiber technology. Modern submarine cables are about 25mm in diameter and weigh around 1.4 tonnes per kilometer.
