Extension Mechanisms for DNS (EDNS) is a specification that allows for the expansion of certain parameters in the DNS protocol. It was created to address the size limitations of the protocol and enable increased functionality. The first set of extensions, known as EDNS0, was published in 1999 and updated in 2013.
