Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a cryptographic protocol used to secure communication over a computer network, with its most visible use being in securing HTTPS. It provides security through the use of certificates and runs in the presentation layer, consisting of the TLS record and handshake protocols. TLS is an IETF standard, with the current version being TLS 1.3, and it builds upon the deprecated SSL specifications developed by Netscape Communications.
