Chaining

Chaining

Chaining is a behavior analysis technique used to teach complex behaviors made up of sequences of steps. It involves using a task analysis to outline the behavior chain, and then using either forward chaining, backward chaining or total task chaining to teach the learner the sequence of steps. The outcome of each step serves as a reinforcer for completing the previous step and as a signal to begin the next step in the chain.
