Enigma Machine

Enigma machine

The Enigma machine was a cipher device used to protect communication during World War II. It had an electromechanical rotor mechanism that scrambled the 26 letters of the alphabet and could be decrypted with the correct settings. Poland was able to crack the machine as early as 1932, and their sharing of this information enabled the Allies to use it as a major source of intelligence. This intelligence is said to have shortened the war and possibly altered its outcome.
