Equivalence relation

Equivalence relation

An equivalence relation in mathematics is a binary relation that is reflexive, symmetric, and transitive. A common example of this is the equipollence relation between line segments in geometry. Each equivalence relation creates a partition of the underlying set into separate equivalence classes, where two elements are equivalent if they belong to the same class.
