Harmony is the process of combining individual sounds into a whole composition. It involves both vertical and horizontal dimensions, and is often associated with consonance, which is the perception of pleasant sounding pitch relationships. Harmony is studied through the juxtaposition of chords and melodic lines, and is often augmented with tensions to create dissonance. Balance between consonance and dissonance is important for harmonization to sound pleasant.
