Classifiers are words or affixes used to accompany nouns in certain languages, mainly East Asian languages, to classify the noun depending on its type. They are often used when counting and can also have other functions such as representing a noun's orientation in space in American Sign Language. Classifiers are similar to but distinct from noun classes which tend to have fewer classifiers and are not always dependent on the nouns' meaning.
