IBM System R

IBM System R was a research project at IBM's San Jose Research Laboratory beginning in 1974. It was the first implementation of SQL and the first system to demonstrate good transaction processing performance. Its design decisions and algorithms influenced many later relational systems, with its first customer being Pratt & Whitney in 1977.
