Decomposition

Decomposition

Decomposition is the process of breaking down dead organic substances into simpler forms of matter. It is essential for recycling matter in the biosphere and is carried out by decomposers or detritivores. Decomposition can be abiotic or biotic, with the latter being the metabolic breakdown of materials by living organisms. Taphonomy is the science that studies decomposition.
