Syntax is the study of how words and morphemes combine to form phrases and sentences. It focuses on word order, grammatical relations, hierarchical sentence structure, agreement, crosslinguistic variation, and the relationship between form and meaning. There are many approaches to syntax with different assumptions and goals.
