A mesh network is a type of local area network where nodes connect directly to as many other nodes as possible, allowing for efficient data routing. This lack of dependency on one node enables every node to participate in relaying information, leading to fault-tolerance and reduced maintenance costs. While mesh networks offer advantages over conventional star/tree topologies, there is currently a lack of common standards and interoperability between devices from different vendors.
