Multicast is a type of group communication where data transmission is addressed to multiple destination computers simultaneously. It can be implemented at the data link or Internet layer, and is often used for streaming media applications such as IPTV and videoconferencing. Network elements such as routers and switches create copies of the transmission for network segments containing members of the group.
