Splines are mathematical functions defined piecewise by polynomials. They are used in interpolation problems and computer-aided design and graphics, as they can be easily constructed, accurately evaluated, and used to approximate complex shapes. The term comes from the flexible spline devices used by shipbuilders and draftsmen.
